PagePlus X5: This review is from: Serif PagePlus X5 (DVD-ROM) I am a publisher of illustrated garden books [...] and a user of PagePlusX4 and then X5. I like the text editor it includes because I can toggle back and forth between the digitized manuscript mode and the illustrated layout mode with a click. If I change the words while I am in layout mode, the manuscript/text mode is updated automatically. I teach the spell checker botanical nomenclature plant by plant as I write the names. But what I like the best is this software's ability to effortlessly test and adjust photos inside the layout. I insert an empty picture box of the size I think I need and click through the illustration files for the right thing. Without any effort I can shrink or enlarge the photo for the best appearance. I can also change the illustration's size and shape in the layout. Before I had this software I would set the exact proportions in one program and then go to Photoshop to crop the image. Not only is this method better for seeing all the options, it is faster and saves many hours of work. A number of unusual fonts come with the software. When my authors and I finish the books I put them out as pdf files. Sometimes I run the pdf output from X5 through Adobe Acrobat in order to comply with certain exacting pdf format specifications which my printer requires. This would not be necessary for everyone. One more thing, you can open any pdf file with this program and then edit it.

PagePlus X5: This review is from: Serif PagePlus X5 (DVD-ROM) Page Plus has been around for more than twenty years - an eternity in software terms - as an inexpensive desktop publishing application for Windows. I was dimly aware of the name, but have mostly used other page layout applications, like Ventura (years ago), Quark, and InDesign. Recently, I needed to do some page layout for some presentations and flyers. I didn't want to spend a large sum on one of the professional packages. After experimenting with Scribus (buggy) I gave PagePlus X5 a try. I was impressed. It is quick to learn (I did have to read the manual), and has many features that compare favourably to its competitors, at a fraction of the price. It can import and edit PDF files. There is a learning curve, as with any program, and some things work differently from Quark and InDesign. Some differences are definite improvements. After watching a few of the instructional videos on the company's site, I had a feel for the basics. I particularly liked that the program can not only do a good job of exporting PDF files, but also let you import and edit them. Impressive. Performance seems fast and stable. Serif offers a slightly confusing range of versions of this software. One is available free, but it's an older version of the software. It's worth checking the various options for buying previous versions and upgrading, which is sometimes less than the price of the new version (X6 as of Jan 2012). I imagine Quark and InDesign must offer some high end features that PagePlus does not - although I'm not sure what. But for most desktop publishing - books, flyers, brochures, posters, ads - this program does an excellent job. It's very, very good value.

PagePlus X5: This review is from: Serif PagePlus X5 (DVD-ROM) Serif Page Plus is in my opinion an outstanding DTP program at a reasonable price. Unless you are a professional that needs (expensive) Quark or Adobe InDesign, this is a worthy alternative worth looking into. Another alternative that surprised me is Art Explosion Publisher Pro. Since both are reasonably priced, I bought both and where one doesn't meet my requirements, the other usually does. One thing you surely want to do when you use these inexpensive programs and have a need to use them for professional projects that require a service bureau or printer is to make sure that they can use your creations. That's very important! As for Serif Page Plus, you'll find that the learning curve is much easier on your nerves than Quark or InDesign. If you know little or nothing about these professional tools, you might want to start here to get your feet wet and then when you are ready for the others, you'll have a head start on what you'll need to know to create and complete your project. While you're looking at Serif Page Plus be sure to look at their other programs... especially Serif PhotoPlus and Serif Draw. I believe you'll be pleased with this software.
